New Year’s Reflection

Middle Eastern Dinner

The end of the year is a natural time for self-reflection. As Christians, we are called to invite God into this process so that our goals and habits center around building a deeper relationship with Jesus.

Reflect on the year before.

Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting. (Psalm 139:23-24 NIV)

Before you starting making a laundry list of goals, reflect on how God worked in your life last year.

  • When did His presence feel most tangible?
  • What did you learn about God that grew your love of His Word?
  • How did God answer your prayers?
  • Is there a behavior or pattern that you need to repent of?

What evidence do you see of God’s goodness, holiness, and sovereignty?

Three ways to model your goals after the life of Jesus.

1. Serve others.

For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many. (Mark 10:45 NIV)

Wherever he went, Jesus was intentional to find opportunities to serve those around him. In the new year, where is the Holy Spirit prompting you to invest you time, talent, and treasure?

2. Embrace God’s Word.

Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. (Matthew 5:17 NIV)

Throughout his earthly ministry, Jesus repeated his belief in God’s Word and how it can shape our lives. One of the most effective ways to grow our faith is by hiding Scripture in our heart. You may have a goal of reading the entire Bible, memorizing a few passages, or diving deep into one book of the Bible.

3. Root your identity in Christ.

For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. (Ephesians 2:10 NIV)

What an incredibly abundant promise that our value and worth doesn’t come from our possessions, power, or prestige. Instead, we are known and loved by our creator. In the year to come, create space to dwell in God’s goodness and love for you.

On the Journey Together

My prayer for you in the year to come, is that we can journey together to learn more about the life of Jesus in ways that transforms your life and encourages your heart.
