Made in God’s Image

Middle Eastern Dinner

One of the core Christian beliefs is that all humans are uniquely made in God’s image. This sets us apart from the rest of creation and gives deep value and purpose to our lives.

Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.”

So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. Genesis 1:26-27 (NIV)

For centuries, theologians have compressed this big theological truth into a succinct phrase: imago deiThis Latin phrase, meaning image of God, separates Christianity from other world religions, especially in the ancient world.

Roman, Greek, and Egyptian gods were fashioned from stone, precious metals, or wood. But God imprinted His image onto humanity.

We were created to reflect and represent His glory to the world. Here are five fundamental ways that our lives as followers of Jeus should be different because we are made in God’s image.

1. Embrace Human Dignity

As Christ’s followers, we must respect and honor every human life, recognizing everyone’s inherent worth. We must choose to look through the lens of imago dei for everyone around us.

Jesus showed human dignity when He interacted with the Samaritan woman at the well (John 4:7-26). Despite cultural prejudices, He treated her with respect and compassion.

From your children to the person on the street corner asking for food, a wealthy philanthropist, or those who have caused hurt and pain to many, all have value in God’s Kingdom.

2. Practice Compassion

Jesus’ ministry was marked by compassion for the outcasts and the downtrodden, and we are to follow His example. Christians should be known for showing love and care for the marginalized, including the poor, oppressed, and those in need.

3. Uphold Sanctity of Life

Valuing and protecting human life at all stages, from conception to natural death, is essential because every life reflects God’s image. This perspective influences how we approach issues like abortion, euthanasia, and the death penalty, always advocating for life.

4. Promote Unity and Reconciliation

We must eliminate prejudice and strive for unity, knowing all humans share the same divine image.

Jesus welcomed Zacchaeus, a tax collector, and dined with him (Luke 19:1-10). Despite Zacchaeus’s reputation, Jesus showed him acceptance and love.

We can foster peace by breaking down race, class, and culture barriers in our neighborhoods, communities, and world.

5. Engage in Evangelism

Sharing the gospel is fundamental because we are created for fellowship with God, and all people have the capacity to know Him. Jesus commissioned His disciples to go and make disciples of all nations (Matthew 28:19-20).

Look for opportunities to talk about Jesus with friends, family, and coworkers, and let your actions reflect Christ’s love and teachings.

Put it into Practice.

Understanding that we are made in God’s image compels us to live differently, to see the world through God’s eyes, and to act with His love and justice.
