How should we respond when our rights have been violated, we are locked in a power struggle, or we see injustice in the world? Sometimes these challenges are personal in marriage or at work. Other times we feel conflicted about larger issues on a local, national, or global level.
Today, let’s see how Jesus responded to a power struggle – and the refreshing truth about how we can find freedom in Christ.
Jesus’ Approach to Power Struggles
When Jesus was on earth, he locked horns with the power-hungry Jewish authorities who had an unyielding grip on the temple, the very place God designed as his residence on earth.
This was especially apparent as he cleansed the temple in the first year of his ministry.
To those who sold doves he said, “Get these out of here! Stop turning my Father’s house into a market!” (John 2:16, NIV)To those who sold doves he said, “Get these out of here! Stop turning my Father’s house into a market!” (John 2:16, NIV)
What Made Jesus So Angry?
-
Corruption. During passover, Jews from all over Jerusalem travelled to the temple for their required sacrifice. They could not travel with animals because of the cost and the risk of the animal becoming blemished. The money exchangers charged exorbitant prices, taking advantage of the less fortunate.
-
Exploitation of the Poor. A tribute to the temple of a “half a shekel”, a Jewish coin, was also required. Since Roman coins were the more common currency, temple-goers needed a place to exchange their money. The money changers charged excessive “fees” and took advantage of the poor.
-
Misplaced Worship. The temple was a place to worship God. However, the money-exchangers prioritized personal profit at the expense of God’s people.
Jesus’ Response
His attack on the merchants was an attack on the authorities who had turned God’s house into a place of commerce.
Jesus alone had the authority to demand change at the temple. He was the Son of God, and this was his Father’s house.
Put it into practice.
Trust God for Justice.
Take your righteous anger to God over injustices and the exploitation of the vulnerable. He will right every wrong with perfect justice. By going first to God, you can let go of your anger and experience God’s peace.
Release Your Anger.
If we are honest, we rarely have righteous anger when it comes to power struggles. Ask God to search your heart and release you from anger or bitterness rooted in selfish motivations.
Our gracious Father promises to deliver justice when we surrender our will to his perfect plan.
