The Storm

A Terrifying Tempest: Facing Fear in the Midst of the Storm

“He said to his disciples, ‘Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?’ Mark 4:40”

Faith Tested on the Waters: Questioning Trust Amidst Turbulence

Why are we so afraid? On a boat in the Sea of Galilee, in the eye of a furious squall, Jesus’ disciples feared for their lives. Yet Jesus, who was in the boat with them, lay sleeping on a cushion. The disciples were losing heart, questioning their faith in him. Haven’t we all been there before, in that very same boat? In the midst of our struggles, our suffering, and the suffering of the world, we panic and wonder if Jesus has abandoned us. If he has abandoned the world.

Beyond Knowing: The Need for Unwavering Trust in Jesus

The threat to the disciples’ faith was not a lack of knowledge about Jesus. They had a pretty good understanding of who Jesus was. After all, they had witnessed firsthand the many miracles Jesus performed—miracles that only the living Son of God could do. But, it wasn’t enough that they knew Jesus on an intellectual level. They needed to trust in Jesus, otherwise, they would be overcome by their doubt and fear.

Steadfast Amidst the Storm: Holding onto Faith in Jesus

We cannot let our fear affect our faith, lest it overcome our trust in Jesus. Even a seismic world event—a war—cannot swamp the boat we are in with Jesus. So, do not lose heart. Do not be afraid. Believe in Jesus, have faith in him. Trust him. Stand firm, even in the midst of life’s storms. Jesus will still the storm once again, as he always does.
